Blogging and Media Engagement
I possess ample experience online and print media sources including blogs, press releases, magazines, and local newspapers.
STC Work
I served for three years (2015–2018) as the Communications Chair and Newsletter Editor for the Florida Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). The end of my term included a thorough knowledge transfer to my successor. After my term, I still provided occasional contributions to the Memo to Members (MtM) newsletter, including a year of regular articles that I wrote and submitted as Vice-President of the chapter. The impact of my term at the helm of MtM is best described by this quote from my final article as Newsletter Editor.
“The saga of this newsletter is a rich one that spans over two decades. We’ve evolved from a traditional PDF layout called Tech Trends that was optimized for print (!) into today’s MtM blog format. This evolution continued during my incumbency as we honed our editorial and distribution processes, migrated websites, and revised our chapter’s name—twice. Sustaining this publication through those changes has been a wild ride!”
I submitted an article to STC’s official Notebook blog at the request of STC’s Vice-President. My blog post is titled The 2018 Summit: When Opportunity Knocks. It describes my experiences from attending an international professional convention for the first time, as well as the role I played in the convention.
I submitted an online article to STC’s official magazine, Intercom, which described how best to prepare for the 2018 Technical Communication Summit in Orlando, Florida. My article (published for Volume 65, Issue 2) is titled Summit Preparation Tips. It featured best practices from a late-career technical communicator, which she shared in an interview with me.
This article is posted on the Intercom website.
However, the direct link is buried behind a paywall, so I am also providing my article here directly for self-promotion purposes only.
Advocacy Work
I submitted a letter to the editor for my city’s local newspaper, The West Volusia Beacon. This article is titled Advocacy at the Capitol: Finding Purpose When Hope is Elusive. It describes my first time advocating for human rights at the state level in the capital city of Florida, Tallahassee. It was published in both print and online formats.
I submitted a press release to the Advocacy Blog for Volusia Pride and DeLand Pride. This statement, which responds to a rule change in Florida government that is widely considered harmful to the LGBTQ+ community, is titled Statement in Response to FLHSMV Rule Change on Driver's License Gender Markers.
